Sounds like some sort of crazed pornographic nightmare doesn’t it? It isn’t though. It’s simply the official snap of the new Bugatti Veyron – sans a roof. It’s called the Grand Sport, a bit of a misnomer given that if you’re using it for ‘sport’ you’d probably want one with a top. It is, after all, more likely to have better aerodynamics.
The Grand Sport is set to be unveiled at this year’s Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance on 16 August. The 1001 horsepower W16 quad-turbo is exactly the same as the standard car (you couldn’t be wanting more power), and the Grand Sport is said to remain just as rigid thanks to ‘innovative structural solutions’. This probably means some more torsional rigidity bars and stuff.
So, what you have in effect is one of the most powerful convertible models ever created. However, as the roof is a simple one-piece affair (with no mention yet of where to store it when you have pulled it away from the body) it’s more like a targa. It makes me laugh that the roof alone is probably the same price as your average hatchback, but that’s by the by.
Production is said to be highly limited, with the first one going by way of auction to someone who is extremely rich. Do I want one? Actually, no. I’m not sure why, but the Bugatti Veyron has always struck me as just as little bit uncool. Granted, a marvel of engineering but uncool nonetheless.
I do like the idea of taking the slip road up to my local Asda at 150+mph though. That has a certain appeal. Only, of course, if I could pay everyone else to stay at home at the same time so I had a safe run. Mind you, if I could afford this car then I could probably also afford to do exactly that.
