General Motors have stated that they have until the end of August to ship off Saab to a Swedish consortium (if this is old news to you, then let me explain – GM is another ‘victim’ of the global credit crunch and is now looked after by Mr Obama), so the future of the brand remains unclear.
One can only hope that a switch of owners will actually result in some newer and interesting cars coming out. Whilst the 9-3 is a decent looking car, it’s actually more of a mid-range motorway cruiser than anything else (actually quite similar to the larger 9-5) and the Saab car range never felt as fast in my experience as the obviously capable engines.
Volvo is another brand that’s making a move. Discussions are ongoing by Ford with another Swedish group and the Chinese car company Geely (it’s unlikely you’ll have driven a Geely unless it’s a very specialist import – not sure why you’d bother though), which would give Geely International a foothold into the European market.
