There are a few rules and regulations regarding lights on your vehicle, which all drivers must adhere to:
You Must
- Use headlights at night
- Use headlights when the visibility is seriously reduced
- Ensure that all sidelights and rear lights (including the registration plate lights) are lit at night.
You Must Not
- Use your lights in any way that may dazzle or cause discomfort to other drivers.
- Use front or rear fog lights unless the visibility is seriously reduced.
You Should
- Use dipped lights when driving in dull daytime conditions
- Keep headlights dipped when overtaking, until you are level with the other vehicle
- Slow down/stop safely if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights.
Hazard Lights
Should only be used when stationary, unless you need to warn other motorists of an obstruction/accident ahead.

August 18, 2007 at 9:53 pmThe use of headlights means that the rear lights will be on as well. Use of rear lights during daylight can seriously reduce the impact of the brake lights on some vehicles. This is more significant on older vehicles or trailers without the high level brake lights. May be worth bearing in mind as it may delay a following driver from realising that you have started to break, possibly suddenly, resulting in not enough time to stop.
I am not sure how you define ‘dull’ in the text above. 10 drivers will give you 10 levels of dull!

November 1, 2010 at 10:51 amAs soon as the streetlights are on in cities, the sidelights of a car should be lit. However, while driving in residential areas, busy markets, play grounds during night time, dipped headlights are necessary for others to see you.

January 29, 2011 at 10:35 pmI have a problem about parking – I live on a 60mph road and have been told by the police that I should be leaving my parking lights on at night. Thats fine if it is only for the night but when I am on holiday how can I do that? Does anyone know of anything that I can use or some sort of lamp that I buy and put in my car windows?
