Few cars are so instantly recognisable as the Porsche 911. Whether it’s a model from 1975 or this modern day evolution, when you see that profile you know what it is straight away. So, does the 2012 Porsche 991 live up to the legend of this car that has now been in production since 1963? I’ve spoken before about the McLaren MP4-12C. It is an engineering marvel and proper supercar with the potent abilities to make a hugely successful GT car. That’s why I thought I’d share with you all the Top Gear review. Granted, Clarkson may profess that the Ferrari 458 Italia is the motor that touches him more, you can’t disagree with the lap time that this monster from Surrey set on the track.

This video from Red Bull of the Dakar Rally 2012 is just amazing. There’s fantastic scenery, fast driving and some spectacular crashes. Well worth a watch.

Looks like a tough race doesn't it? Taking 14 days to complete more than 8000 kilometres, the route from Argentina, through Chile and to Peru is attempted in a variety of different vehicles. The four categories are Bike (450cc), Quad, Car & Truck. Unsurprisingly for the variety of surfaces the overall winner was on a bike but from the video you can see that these guys are most at risk from the rough terrain. It must take a certain kind of bravery or craziness to take on a challenge like this. 2012 overall winner Cyril Despres had this to say at the end

"The 2012 Dakar is without a shadow of a doubt the toughest Dakar I have ever raced in. It was very demanding physically but also such an intense psychological battle. Every day, I had to rise to the challenge and that takes its toll on the mind. It’s definitely a marathon and not a sprint because even when you do a good job one day, you have to go out there and repeat it tomorrow and the next day for two tough weeks."

Take a look at the video courtesy of Drive, a new channel on Youtube. For the record, I have a massive respect for all racing car drivers – the levels of concentration required are massive. However, I believe that top rate endurance drivers are a breed apart. Just imagine taking the carousel at huge speed in the dark…

There’s little else to say to round up 2011 than to cap it off with an aspirational supercar, review courtesy of Top Gear. In our lifetimes, very few of us will own one. It’s like owning a piece of art or an extremely expensive house. For most, it simply doesn’t happen. It remains something that fascinates and amazes by equal measure. Something we hold up as an avatar to say “yes, that is the ultimate in driving”.

In the real world, I wouldn’t want to drive a race car on the road. We have road traffic laws for a reason. Whilst race cars are ideal for the track, A supercar should be simply sublime on the road. This is where the Lamborghini Aventador comes in. It looks, sounds and drives the part. Enjoy the video.

I just love these super small, super performance, road legal race cars. The ‘SL’ in the name stands for Street Legal. Radical produce the sort of car that very quickly sorts the men from the boys, as well as putting hairs on your chest when you try to power around a corner. It’s fairly unlikely you’ll see one blasting past you on a motorway but that’s not really the point. A rich man’s weekend toy? Perhaps. However, it looks like it would be a truly supreme drive.

The Honda Civic is an extremely well known sight on British roads. Honda is releasing a new variant of the ever popular hatchback for 2012 and it appears to have had a minor facelift of the more aggressive sorts. Not necessarily a bad thing you may say.
