A friend of mine has a Subaru Impreza WRX and another a fast Ford. Yet another has a supremely frugal Fiat 500. My question is, do you sacrifice not just speed but responsiveness to fuel economy? My friend who had an RX-8 wouldn’t buy anything with less than 200 horsepower!

June 18, 2011 at 7:55 amI made the choice to switch to economy when I bought my current Focus diesel, which at the time was just 3 months old and a considerable investment. It’s great getting 60mpg and cheap road tax, but I really miss the performance and character of a petrol engine.
Next time I’m seriously considering getting an older car (4-5 years old) but something much more interesting (Golf GTI, Leon Cupra perhaps) and using the savings to put towards the petrol bill. Depreciation will be lower but insurance and maintenance costs will be higher. It’s a gamble, but at least I should get more enjoyment out of driving again.
