Any steps you can take to ensure your car is kept as secure as possible will have a twofold benefit: firstly, you’ll have the peace of mind that comes with making your car less likely to be stolen, broken into or vandalised, and secondly you’ll be going a long way to ensuring that your next car insurance quote comes in at a lower price.
Increased security measures may require a relatively expensive outlay in the short term, but they’ll more than pay for themselves over the long term by adding value to your car and ensuring cheaper premiums for years to come.
If your vehicle doesn’t already have a car alarm then this should be your first port of call. Alarms give off a piercing sound if the car is jolted or if doors are opened or windows smashed, so they act as an excellent deterrent to criminals who don’t wish to draw attention to their nefarious activities. Some modern alarms also offer a pager system, allowing you to be alerted to incidents involving your car even if you’re out of earshot of the alarm itself.
Immobilisers are also a great idea for heightening vehicle security; while it won’t do anything in terms of stopping a criminal from breaking into your car in the first place, it will prevent the vehicle from being started until it has been properly deactivated – making it extremely difficult for the thief to make his getaway.
If you’re looking to take vehicle security to the next level, however, look into fitting an electronic tracker to your car. These devices give off a signal that allows the police to keep tabs on the location of your car after it has been stolen, making the chances of recovery a great deal higher than in normal circumstances. For that reason, having a tracker fitted can have a significant impact on the cost of your car insurance.
As well as adding electronics to your car to make it a less likely target for thieves, you can take other steps to reduce your risk. Locking your vehicle away in a secure garage is always preferable but if that’s not an option for you then look to keep your car on a driveway or a well-lit street overnight.
