An agreement has been made between Fiat and Mazda that will see the latter produce an open topped two seater sports car for Fiat, selling under the Alfa Romeo brand.
The new Alfa Romeo roadster will be developed for the global market, and will be based on the architecture of the next generation Mazda MX-5. The agreement foresees for both Mazda and Fiat to develop two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive. The Mazda and Alfa Romeo variants will each be powered by specific proprietary engines unique to each brand.
This is of course something that Toyota and Subaru did with the GT-86 and BRZ respectively and we both know that it produced two cracking cars. They were almost identical, but that isn’t a bad thing when it really doesn’t matter which you choose. The new Mazda/Fiat car will be the new Alfa Romeo Roadster/Spider and the new MX-5 – so it better be good!
