To some, movies are about Brad Pitt, Megan Fox, salty popcorn and some over-priced pick ‘n’ mix, but to us, it’s the cars that matter. We know some of them aren’t real, but the idea of getting behind the wheel of some these great motors still gets our hearts racing.
Satnav gurus Mio thought they’d take a look at some of the best four-wheeled stars to ever grace the big screen. Do you agree or would you have a movie car of your own that deserves a mention?
10. Risky Business – 1981 Porsche 928
You can hardly blame Joel for taking this on a joyride. If our parents left this beautiful car in the garage and then went away for the weekend, we would have jumped into the driving seat.
9. The Dukes of Hazzard – 1969 Dodge Charger R/T
In at number nine is the 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, better known as the General Lee. The cast may have got a modern upgrade for the big screen, but thankfully the original 69 was still used in the 2005 film. It’s fast, fun and fit.
8. Love Bug – 1963 Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle)
Herbie makes it in at number eight. Ok, so he might not look as cool as some of the others on the list but he has a mind of his own, is capable of driving himself and was a serious contender in auto racing competitions. This magical little car will always have a place in our hearts.
7. K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand) Knight Rider
We know it never made it on to the big screen, but we strongly believe this car was held back by David Hasselhoff’s acting skills and is more than worthy of its spot at number seven. This black, two-door Pontiac Trans-AM, K.I.T.T. could drive on its own, talk, provide logical detective work, and if that’s not enough, it survived The Hoff!
6. Die Another Day – Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
James Bond is famous for three things: girls, gadgets and cars. If there is one thing we love about Bond cars it’s that they’re super fast and super sexy and this car is no exception. Watching the Aston slide around on a frozen lake in Die Another Day has confirmed its place as one of the best movie cars ever!
5. Back to the Future 1/2/3 – 1981 Delorean DMC 12
This is one of the most memorable movie cars of all time. It exploded onto our screens in the 80s when it featured in Back to the Future 1, 2 and 3 and changed the face of time travel forever. The Delorean DMC 12 was not only a time machine but a hover car that rocked the 80s. Time to warm up that flux capacitor!
4. The Italian Job 1969 – Austin Mini Cooper S
Since the Mini launched onto the scene in the 1969 film The Italian Job it has taken the auto world by storm. Its speed and agility made it one of the most striking cars around and forty years on nothing’s changed. Although Michael Caine and Noel Coward are the stars of the movie, it is the Mini that really steals the show.
3. Starsky and Hutch – 1976 Ford Gran Torino
The long-running TV show made this car popular but it was the 2004 film that secured its legendary status. Its new polished look was enough to make us want to paint our car red and white!
2. Goldfinger, Tomorrow Never Dies, Thunderball, Golden Eye, and Casino Royale – Aston Martin DB5
This is the second entry for a Bond car and this one was, let’s face it, a no brainer. Not only is this car fast, stunning and good fun, but it’s an Aston Martin DB5… A legend in its own right!
1. The Batmobile Tumbler
Now this car definitely pushes the boundaries of what we can call a car but nevertheless it’s a worthy winner. There isn’t a man, woman or child out there that hasn’t dreamt about getting behind the wheel of the Batmobile, and this might be its greatest incarnation yet. Its appearance in the 2005 film Batman Begins and transformation into the Batpod in The Dark Knight confirmed its iconic status – a status even further driven to new heights as it has now been awarded our Oscar for the best movie car.
