In the second of articles looking at tyres this week, here’s a little quiz – just what sort of activity will wear tyres more quickly?
It isn’t actually driving at high speeds on a motorway like a lot of people think. It’s another type of fast driving – driving aggressively or frenetically.
When you’re cruising along at a steady speed (say 70 miles per hour on a motorway), you’re not putting the tyres under very much load or asking too much of them. However, start using heavy braking or cornering and it’s a whole different story.
When you corner at excessive speed, you’re asking the tyres to maintain their grip, continue putting power down and also follow the line that you’re dictating. Add to this some heavy accelerating and braking and the tyres will wear far more due to the greater forces being exerted.
In the long run, you’ll save money by driving in a more sensible fashion – not just on your rubber but on your fuel economy as well.
