It is irritating when you are left stranded by a broken down car, but it can also be a frightening and dangerous experience. Car breakdown cover is something that you may want to consider, whether you use your vehicle to go to and from work or just for personal use.
For a set amount, you can ensure that in the event of your vehicle breaking down, there will be someone to call who will take care of you and your car at any time of the day or night. Many companies offering breakdown cover also offer car insurance, and you may be eligible for a discount if you take out both.
There are a number of different types of breakdown cover, from basic roadside recovery to a package that includes accommodation and onward travel, and companies vary in their pricing and policy details. Here are the details of a few well-known companies offering car breakdown cover:

Tips to Help you Choose
- Decide what you need/want in a car breakdown package:
- Do you travel long distances, and more likely to need courtesy car availability or cover for travel costs?
- Do you tend to travel short distances and use the car less often, so perhaps only need a more basic package of roadside recovery?
- How much can you afford to pay for car breakdown cover?
- Would you consider taking out car insurance with that company, or do you already have a policy with them, and qualify for a discount?
- Do you want to pay monthly, or make a one-off payment only?
- How long do you need cover?
- How many people is the breakdown cover for- is it single, joint or family?
- Shop around to get an idea of prices and types of cover, either by phone, in car magazines or on the internet.
- Some companies offer a discount for cover arranged over the internet.
- Always check the conditions and exclusions. Some companies may seem cheap, but there may be a lot of hidden costs, so take time and look carefully.

October 11, 2007 at 1:50 pmIt is true you may get free or cheaper breakdown cover if you take out insurance. But do you really get it free and is it exactly what you need? Examples are cover for the car or cover for the person.

January 23, 2009 at 6:42 pmcool post on an awesome blog i worked for a major breakdown company for many years and have also been in a couple of breakdowns. Without doubt you should take out some form of cover, think carefully about what cover you need you dont want find your hundreds of miles away from home unable to get towed home because you didnt take out cover with an option to tow you anywhere in the UK. Also you will save money by getting joint family or vehicle cover over multiple single policies in one home.

June 24, 2011 at 12:04 pmMulti Car Breakdown Cover is also a better option.
A multi breakdown cover comes with all the benefits that you get in a separate plan. There are multiple cover options to choose from such as-
Roadside assistance- It is a basic breakdown cover type wherein the company will provide 24 X 7 roadside assistance. The mechanic will try to fix the problem roadside.
The cover may include towing to the nearest garage in case the car cannot be fixed by the mechanic.
Home and Roadside assistance- This cover is very similar to one mentioned above with the added benefit that it covers for all breakdowns when the car is parked at home. So, if your car doesn’t starts in the morning then you can call for the services of the company.
Comprehensive breakdown cover- This cover will help you get all help and is very useful if you drive long distances. The company will arrange a replacement car in case your car breaks down midway and may also arrange for overnight stay.
