Small crossover SUVs are difficult to get right, not because car manufacturers are making them badly, but because they comprise a tricky combination of elements that frankly doesn’t always work.
A car that’s sporty yet small, versatile on the road but also competent in terms of hauling people from A to B means that people have high expectations of these vehicles in some cases it doesn’t always work out well.
One of the most difficult things is adding the ‘sport’ element to something that has the characteristics of a hatchback which is where the Infiniti EX tries to set itself apart. Having written about a number of Infiniti cars in the past we could well be seeing more of them on UK roads soon.
Similar mechanically to the Infiniti G models, the EX35 performs better than your average crossover SUV especially in terms of performance. The updated 3.5-litre V6 engine, which delivers 295 horsepower and accelerates from zero to 60 in six seconds, means that this vehicle combines some of the best ride and handling characteristics of any small luxury crossover in this class.
But what doesn’t the Infiniti have? It’s a good city vehicle; it looks smart, drives explosively and the interiors are refined and comfortable. It’s not a utility vehicle, however; it won’t carry kids to school or hold loads of suitcases. But for couples or single professionals who appreciate the appeal of this car’s elegance and performance, it deserves more than a second glance.
