Some of these you’ll be in agreement with straight away, others are a little more tricky. Here’s my predictions on what we can all expect from 2011 in terms of motoring:
- Petrol prices will hit £1.50 per litre, diesel being around the same
- Many more electric vehicles will be purchased – but primarily the purchase pattern will be concentrated in London due to electric cars being exempt from the congestion charge
- Due to the downturn in the economy, insurance premiums will continue to be high for renewals
- As a result of the point above, more motorists will commit offences by driving without valid insurance
- Due to everything costing more, fewer new drivers will hit the road
- Premium supercar brands such as Ferrari and Lamborghini will continue to produce amazing vehicles, with smaller capacity engines providing more efficient, yet equally powerful performance
- Manufacturers will continue to look at the past for a taste of the future (such as the Audi Quattro concept)
- Smaller engines fitted with either a supercharger, turbocharger or both will feature in many, many new models
- Larger luxury cars with thirstier engines (such as an A8 with a 4.2 litre engine) will be an excellent bargain, if you drive few miles
- The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport will lose the world title for top speed, but will remain a better car than the new title holder
- Formula 1 will be more competitive this season over last season
- Skoda will continue to manufacture happy drivers
- The new McLaren road car will blow most other cars away
- The Toyota Hilux will prove how tough it really is with a trip to the moon
- The current fad for crossover vehicles without a clear identity will begin to fade away
- When the winter passes, a mass of four wheel drive vehicles bought just for the snow will hit the market
- The first electric vehicle to be able to reach 200 miles on one charge will arrive in the market
- Clarkson, May and Hammond will make some changes to Top Gear to make sure it remains fresh
- Manufacturers will take less risks due to fewer new car buyers in the market
- The trend for customising cars (see for example the options at purchase for the DS3) will grow in popularity
- Small car sales will rise the most of any sector
