I thought it was high time that we took a look at some of your thoughts about driving these days, rather than listening to me talk about what I think are the issues of the day. So, based on a recent poll conducted on this very site, let’s see the results of what worries you about driving:
- Fuel prices (34%, 110 Votes)
- Driving standards (25%, 81 Votes)
- Drink drivers (11%, 37 Votes)
- Potholes (11%, 35 Votes)
- Busy roads (8%, 25 Votes)
- Other (6%, 21 Votes)
- Cyclists (4%, 13 Votes)
- Pedestrians (1%, 2 Votes)
- Road debris (0%, 1 Votes)
It’s quite clear that the main offender is, and is likely to remain, good old fuel prices. There’s nothing that can be done about this one short of the government reducing fuel tax and duty. Which of course they never will as prices go up, not down!
Driving standards is the second. I’m not sure whether I’ve seen the standard of driving fall – if anything the newest test should make less experienced drivers safer. However, there’s no doubt that even a cursory glance around will reveal a multitude of four wheeled errors. This isn’t helped by the sheer number of cars on the road.
In third is drink driving. I didn’t ask whether people were concerned that they were drink driving or that there were drink drivers out there (!!!) but I’ll assume it’s the latter. I haven’t yet had a chance to look at the latest government statistics but this is a genuine worry for a number of you out there.
Garnering a similar amount of votes are the deathtraps waiting to happen – pot holes. So named and yet I do think some of the ones I’ve seen would be better served being called massive craters. Yet there we are. The government doesn’t have enough money to fix them all. Is that ok when your suspension dies early or you go flying off a pedal cycle? Hence these are your concerns.
The last few I included were the general issues that we all have as motorists so I didn’t predict them scoring as highly as the others. Two people clearly weren’t happy with pedestrians though!
