This is the first in a new series from Car Articles – A Car I Love. The first car I’d like to highlight in this editorial is the rather wonderful Mercedes AMG GT. It’s the top of the range sports car offered from the German marque and it shows. Whilst you can’t detract from other brands such as Ferrari or even the classic Aston Martin, there is something about the Mercedes design philosophy that really speaks to me.
The car is badged a GT. The engine is a twin turbo V8. Rear wheel drive and a double clutch gearbox is standard fitment. 0-62 is despatched within four seconds, should you choose the slower of the two models on offer. GT? Well, I think the argument for supercar could easily be made.
Having seen some of the early design work, I worried that Mercedes may produce a car that appeared ungainly in real life. A little too much of a hark back to the days of long bonnet, huge engine and small interior space. Then however I saw the thing and my opinion was no longer in question. This car is stunning.
Forget about everything that you see in glossy staged magazines. Forget about all the words that you read on the page. Do yourself a favour and attend a car show with some precious metal. That’s what I did to snap this photo and I was staggered. There were more expensive cars present, but Gorden Wagener (the Mercedes-Benz design chief) has sculpted a genuine thing of beauty that pulled more desire from me than anything else on show.
Well proportioned, purposeful and fast even when stood still. I’m not sure I could ask for anything else. Wagener, we salute you.
