Audi SQ7 TDI

A diesel engine has always been the preferred choice when it comes to an SUV.  The larger and heavier body normally needs more torque to get it going.  That’s where an oil burner comes into its own – you wouldn’t want to have to hit high revs in this type of car, that’s not really what an SUV is about.

Audi, realising this, have gone all out with the SQ7 TDI in producing a car quite unlike anything else when it comes to power.  It is fitted with a 4 litre V8 diesel engine with two exhaust gas turbochargers.  Furthermore, and this is a first in the industry folks, power is bolstered by an electronic compressor.  This is all to ensure that there’s no lag that’s typically associated with diesel powerplant.

The facts and figures tell the story here really – 435PS of power and 900Nm of torque.  This thing will have shove in spades.  The 0-62 sprint is despatched in 4.8 seconds and the top speed is an electronically governed 155 miles per hour.  Slow this car isn’t.  All in, this is the most powerful standard production diesel SUV that you can buy.

Ordering is expected to start in May 2016 and deliveries will commence in August 2016.  Pricing isn’t yet confirmed but we’d suggest a £10,000 premium over the 3 litre car (which is listed at about £62,000)  Should you buy one?  Well the MPG will be better in this than the petrol derivative and such a high level of torque will make this thing seriously fast.  What isn’t to like?
