It was revealed today that a motorist whose car was written off (and I mean written off by all accounts) by a mechanic was shocked to discover that the same garage sent him a bill for £400. No wonder you’re curious as to what the bill pertained to – it was in fact the charges for the service carried out prior to the smash!
Mr Alan Rees had his 1998 Daewoo crashed during a test drive from Pinhoe Garage in Exeter. Trading Standards have come forward to inform Mr Rees that he should not pay the bill – unsurprisingly the garage was not available for comment.
I’m not any sort of lawyer, but I would be extremely surprised if you can’t get garage insurance that also covers for when your mechanics inevitably take a motor out for a quick test drive to make sure that everything’s working as it should. Equally, this insurance would act as a loss adjuster should the worst kind of accident happen.
Moral of the story? If garage actually damages your car or makes any sort of problem worse, my recommendation is to go immediately to Trading Standards and let them know of exactly what’s went on. As always, I welcome any comments from you all on problems you’ve experienced at garages around the UK.
