There are some very valid reasons for having a bigger car – for example if you regularly transport the whole family you’ll probably want more space inside. However, so called ‘executive’ cars seem to be more of a status symbol than really required by the one person sitting behind the wheel who is going up and down the motorway.
I’ve decided that in all probability I don’t want a smaller car than the one I currently have, though I can’t decide if that’s based on a rational choice or simply it’s what I’m used to. Granted, there are times when I have a car full of people, but there are other times when it’s just me – so why do I need a small to medium car rather than just a small car?
It may well be the case that I’m clinging on to the reason that a longer wheel base means more comfort over a longer journey and many small cars aren’t designed for motorway travel (my mother has a VW Polo which manages fine it seems) and I know I can’t justify an estate or a Range Rover, but could I get away with a C1 for example?
The VW Golf remains a great car, but it seems every iteration is slightly bigger than the last. Certainly the latest Ford Fiesta is an absolutely cracking motor – it is also the largest a Fiesta has ever been.
Ultimately the question I would like to pose is whether car size is important to you and if so for what reason? Is there a size or shape of car you’d never go for?

May 27, 2011 at 9:35 amI’m not sure I could live with a very small car (e.g. Aygo, iQ etc) because I just don’t feel safe in them on motorways. I drive a Mini (new one) so not exactly the biggest car, but I never feel vulnerable in it next to lorries at 70mph.
That said I couldn’t live with a massive car everyday, they’re just not enough fun to drive!
