Apparently, New York state is seeking a new form of transport for the masses who go private hire, as the current taxi is uneconomical and uncomfortable. The Ford Crown Victoria may be iconic, but it’s also a bit of a joke, coming in at 12 MPG just isn’t acceptable any more, unless your car has only two seats and a big V8 (or V10/V12/W12/W16 motor). Frankly, it galls that the MPG figure is so low as it makes a mockery of how much we really pay for petrol over here in comparison – most taxi drivers would collapse in the UK if they drove a car with as little MPG – that’s why most of them stick with Octavias or similar which come in the 1.9 TDI flavour.
Anyway, have a read of the rest of the article, it’s quite interesting, if depressing that they haven’t moved with the times more quickly.
