The scrappage scheme that was providing desperately needed buyers of new cars to forecourts across the UK will not be extended to 2010 it has been announced. Lord Mandelson (Peter) told a conference on the 24th that the scheme will end as planned. A total of 400,000 motorists are likely to have taken up the offer provided by the scheme, giving up to £2,000 officially off a new motor, though in some cases more, by the end of February 28th, 2010 – marking the official closing date for the scheme.
Worryingly, whilst Mandelson spoke about keeping the car industry afloat, he did mention that Ministers wanted the UK to become a “low carbon capital of Europe”. Does this mean that in a few years time the government will be forcing everyone into grotty little eco-matchboxes? Watch this space, you heard it here first…
