The Renault Megane Mk4 is now in regular production as a standard hatchback. There isn’t yet an estate version, or perhaps more importantly, a hot version. That’s what makes this Final Megane III RenaultSport RS 275 Cup-S so special. It is the culmination of the best bits that the Mk3 variant could offer.
The car was finished in the Spanish production factory of the French marque on the 6th of July 2016 and has recently gone on sale at Arnold Clark Renault Dundee, although a quick look seems to suggest it has already gone folks.
The 275 Cup-S is powered by the same 2.0-litre, 275hp turbocharged petrol engine as the limited-edition 275 Trophy-R which, in June 2014, shattered the lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car around the 13-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7 minutes 54.36 seconds. Acceleration from 0-62mph is attainable in 6.0 seconds and the top speed is 158mph.
Having first gone on sale in the UK in 2009 as the Mégane Renault Sport 250, the third generation Mégane’s power has been boosted twice – to 265bhp in 2012 and finally up to 275bhp in 2015. From the 250 to the hardcore 275 Trophy-R to the latest 275 Cup-S , over 30,000 of the third generation Mégane Renault Sport have found homes in over 30 different countries across Europe, Australasia and the Pacific.
Why do we like this car so much? It’s pretty simple really to anyone who has ever driven a French hot hatch – this is a formula that the marque knows very well. A small to medium size car, a good power plant and a chassis and drive train to make the most of it. What isn’t to like right there?
Best of all, whilst it may be in a three door format, this a genuinely usable everyday driver that’ll put a smile on your face before and after you’ve picked up the shopping or dropped the little ones off at school. Granted that paintwork scheme may not be to everyone’s taste, but the driving experience absolutely will be.
