If you’re thinking about buying a sports car then you need to consider if it will suit your lifestyle. Sports cars are not for everyone.
If you have kids or spend a lot of time in the car on the commute or for work, then maybe it might not be the most suitable car. But then suitability is not really the point! They are all about speed, power and acceleration. Driving a sports car is about trying to rediscover why you fell in love with driving in the first place. So, just what do you need to consider when you have made the choice to go for looks and speed over practicality?
Convertible or coupe
For many, the ideal sports car should be a convertible but just how often would you get to put the roof down? It might be a better idea to go for a coupe. Soft tops look great but they can be noisy, a bit cold and not great for security but still a great option if you are looking for fast cars. It’s much easier to get through canvas than a solid outer body. That said, there is just something that looks so right about the roof down.
Cost
Of course this kind of car is likely to be on the pricey side. The costs don’t stop with the initial purchase, as they will cost more to insure, more to run and depreciate more quickly than more practical models. So, you need to make sure you really love the car before you buy it because it might not reward you financially.
Performance
The whole point of a sports car is that it should perform well. It’s no good just sitting there and looking nice if it makes overtaking a coach a long drawn out affair. You need to know that when you put your foot down, it has the muscle and power to respond. Otherwise you might just be driving around in a glorified roller-skate. This is never a problem if you go for a trusted and respected name like Mercedes.
Choose carefully
As we have mentioned, sports cars don’t hold their value very well, they show their age more than other cars and bad design is permanent. Pick a model that is bang on trend or one that is set to become a future classic and you will stand more chance of being able to sell it on. Get it right and you will have years of really enjoyable driving ahead of you.
