Here in Europe, if you’re buying sports performance it tends to be the brands that we’re more aware of on this side of the pond – such as Porsche, BMW (M series) and Lotus. However, if you’re after something that is just that little bit different, then why not consider a true American Corvette?
A revision to the 2008 Model Year prices on the C6 and the Z06 has meant that they’ve just become a little bit more affordable. The front engine and rear drive setup makes the Corvette a smoking proposition in either guise, especially when the performance is damn hot (at least in a straight line) and they offer a huge amount of value for money.
The ‘basic’ C6 is offered as either a coupe or a convertible and can reach 60 in only 4.3 seconds, whilst if you open the taps fully (if you happen to have access to an airplane runway) you should be able to max out this monster to 186mph. You can now pick one up for only £39,999.
The faster(!) race-monster that is the Z06 can reach 60 in an amazing 3.9 seconds and will hit 198mph, so it isn’t exactly a slouch. Even better, you can grab one for only £55,000 – so whilst not a bargain it sure will beat anything else on the road!
I have to say, I’d quite like a Corvette – but it would have to be a modern one so that it can actually turn corners. More to the point, I’d also have to be able to cover the cost of the 15mpg fuel consumption that really puts a dampener on sports cars such as these.
