Will Renault quit F1 over the investigation into the Singapore Grand Prix last year? That’s the rumour doing the rounds and there’s no doubt that Flavio Briatore is a very influential, decisive and determined man who is not afraid of controversy. Apparently, the FIA is looking into the race that was won by Fernando Alonso, as Nelson Piquet Jr crashed on lap 14, forcing the safety car to come into play (important in Alonso’s victory).
I’d be surprised if Bernie Ecclestone allows one of the most famous teams to leave so simply – I’d be even more surprised if there was any truth into the allegations of a deliberate crash. I’ve been vocal in my lack of support for Piquet Jr and many would say that he didn’t get a fair cop at Renault – so I’m fairly sure that he would be quite happy to talk to the press if it was the case that he’d been somehow forced into getting into a crash.
F1 is a sport that involves big money, but to suggest that drivers (who stay in the sport due to skill) would knowingly put themselves in danger, alongside their future careers, seems like a ridiculous affair. Still, stranger things have happened in sport. I’d like for Piquet Jr to come back into the sport and show what he can really do too, to boot.
