The image above is the Chevrolet Trax (interesting name I know for what will be even in the most potent guise a soft roader only) – however it could just as easily be, barring the badge, any one of several vehicles from a number of manufacturers. The reason? Small sports utility vehicles, crossovers or baby off-roaders are now huge, huge business across the globe. Almost every marque has one. Here’s a small list:
- Volkswagen Tiguan
- Range Rover Evoque
- Skoda Yeti
- Nissan Qashqai
- Peugeot 3008
- Hyundai ix35
- Mazda CX-5
- Volvo XC60
- Mitsubishi ASX
- Kia Sportage
- Audi Q3
So as you can see, there is a very wide range of vehicles from an equally wide range of manufacturers – and that list isn’t anywhere near exhaustive. Best of all? Every one gives you something different. However, they all share some benefits which make this type of car popular amongst the public. These are:
- A high driving position. With a crossover you have a great view out into the world.
- A feeling of security. A small car can feel cosseting, but a reasonably sized small SUV makes you feel safe.
- Big wheels in some serious arches. Most of the crossovers listed aren’t performance cars, but you can get some serious alloy to sit in those equally serious deep arches.
- Space and clever storage. Crossovers are designed to be that little more practical than the average family car and many of them offer cubby holes, clever rear folding seats and much more.
- The option for four wheel drive. Buying a crossover doesn’t mean you are stuck with the lower economy (but better grip) of four wheel drive. Many of the vehicles listed above are available in two wheel drive only or alternatively with clever four wheel drive that you can switch on and off at will.
So there you go – some really nice crossover cars and the reason why we are, as a nation, seemingly completely in love with them. My choice? I still have a massive desire for a Hyundai ix35 in the 2.0 CRDi 6 Speed Auto 4WD … Four wheel drive luxury all the way!
