GEM Motoring Assist, the road safety organisation and breakdown cover company, is delighted as a national campaign is launched by ITV’s Daybreak to stop mobile phone use while driving. This week, the weekday breakfast show is running a ‘Phone Free Zone’ campaign and is actively encouraging people across the country to pledge their support.
Similarly determined to raise awareness of the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone, GEM launched a ‘Kill the Conversation’ campaign in 2012, including a video and leaflet, to highlight just how illegal and dangerous it can be.
David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, comments: “Driving while using a mobile phone can make motorists four times more likely to have a crash, and this type of shocking information shows how essential it is to raise awareness and a better understanding of the dangers. Daybreak is a hugely influential TV programme and we are delighted that it is promoting such an important road safety issue. We have no doubt that their campaign will have a strong and positive impact, and we hope that motorists take heed of all the advice on offer.”
In its national survey last summer, GEM revealed that 91 per cent of UK drivers think that the penalties for motorists caught using a mobile phone should be increased to act as more of a deterrent.
David concludes: “Driving while using a mobile phone can make reaction times 50 per cent worse than when driving normally, making it one of the most dangerous laws to break on the road. We join Daybreak in urging motorists to get behind this road safety campaign and help make our roads a safer place for everyone.”
