Now it is the turn of General Motors to call upon the help of the government in order to stay afloat. The Chief operating officer has said that governments across Europe will need to step in immediately in order for the manufacturer to stay afloat.
Of course, what the root of the problem is the potential loss of jobs. No-one, no-one wants to be in this position. However, I find it a little rich that someone in his position is asking employees for “shared sacrifices” when Fritz Henderson is probably making many times the ‘average’ salary.
In Germany, a precondition of the sale was that Opel had a future that was sustainable. Unfortunately, the German Finance Minister didn’t see Opel having this kind of plan in store, and so they haven’t yet got the cash. Swedish and UK governments have similarly so far been reluctant to invest is Saab and Vauxhall respectively.
Perhaps most unfortunate is that some of the newer products from GM were actually riding the crest of a wave of success in the form of the Insignia – Car of the Year 2009.
