Cars can develop rattles, squeaks and other sundry noises during their lives. It might be that the window starts to creak as it is moved up or down or alternatively after driving over a nasty pothole the suspension might begin to complain. The classic is of course squealing brakes – in which case it is time to have the pads (and possibly discs) changed. Knocking from steering however should also be taken seriously.
There are a number of causes of knocking including (but not limited to):
- A failed or failing CV joint/drive shaft. If this goes totally wrong the car will have no drive at all.
- A problem with worn suspension bushes.
- Steering rack problems.
- Loose articles rattling around in the boot or otherwise in the interior of the car.
- Subframe issues (you don’t want this one).
- A loose heat shield or similar.
So, apart from the loose items in your car, I’d suggest all of the above warrant one thing – a trip to a local reputable mechanic to address the problems. Unless you’re absolutely sure it is nothing to worry about it is always worth a look to ensure that your car will function as required all of the time.
