There’s little worse when it comes to a hot car journey than turning on your air conditioning and finding it just blows out hot air. Like any other consumable, the refrigerant gas within the delicate system is used up over time. If your air con isn’t checked (most manufacturers recommend every two years) you might notice the following:
- Air does not get any colder or dryer
- The blowers just blow hot air at you
- There is an unpleasant smell when the system is activated
- Your windscreen does not demist as quickly as it did previously
Whilst you can buy an air con refill, it is worth remembering that the system is under pressure. It is extremely inadvisable to incorrectly refill the system. We would far rather that you take your car to a service centre that can check relevant levels and also give the system a full service. It’s also worth remembering that if you don’t put in enough refrigerant the system still won’t work.
I recently took my own car to a local Halfords Autocentre. Prices may vary but I paid £59 for a full air con service, recharge and antibacterial treatment. As a result, the car was better smelling, it was once again cold and overall a far nicer environment to be in. You may think it’s a bit of an expensive outlay for not very much, but a more comfortable environment means less distractions when you are out on the road.
