The current debacle over the future of Formula 1 racing has just got a little more stupid. Rather than trying to get to the bottom of the various issues (such as the budget cap) that are dictating which teams will be involved in the 2010 Grand Prix, things have now descended into name calling. In an interview conducted with the BBC during their qualifying session coverage of the Silverstone Grand Prix, Max Mosley described the other parties (one can assume that this includes FOTA) involved as ‘the loonies’.
I’m not a huge fan of Max Mosley, but whatever my personal feelings, it’s clear that the situation is out of control. Mosley is an extremely clever man, so to be reduced to this level – of petty squabbling – is ridiculous. I don’t care if Flavio Briatore wants Bernie Ecclestone’s job – but Bernie talked sense during the coverage. He said that the situation is completely out of hand and people should continue to understand their place.
Ultimately, F1 is a truly historic, futuristic, exciting and world famous sport. To have it dragged through the mud in this way is very disappointing. We can only hope that Ecclestone has the power and authority to bring everyone back together.
