A survey conducted by Exchange & Mart has shown that fuel economy is becoming a major factor when considering the purchase of a used vehicle. The respondents stated that from their next purchase they are looking for something with better fuel economy and a lower tax bracket – something that for a lot (though not all) of models goes hand in hand.
Where does that leave the rest of us? Well, there’ll be plenty of ‘average’ models that manufacturers simply churned out in their lazy way that were neither good for the environment or particularly economical – don’t go near these with a barge pole. Cars like that should be avoided at all costs as they do no-one any favours.
Instead, if you are a keen driver, look for something that offers reward. Don’t go out of your way to get something that produces horrendous amounts of g/km of CO2 but do consider where you can get bang for your buck. Old Golf GTi’s for instance are an extremely good purchase and you get a decent badge into the bargain, if that’s your thing.
Alternatively, if you have the cash, look for something with a V8 engine. Yes, they will be forever thirsty. But, if you don’t do too many miles, then the reward is obvious in that you’ll have a car that won’t have been stressed and if you get the right one (such as a Vauxhall Monaro) should offer great smiles for the price.
