Oh, It’s Gonna Cost Ya…

November 1, 2008 by Mr Butterscotch Leave a Comment

The title is of course a favourite phrase of many mechanics – or at least it is based on the stereotype. What do you think though? There’s something to be said for the work of a mechanic. They charge rather a lot – or again is that just the stereotype? Half the time, of course, their price is based on the qualification of also having to bill a customer for parts – something that can become very expensive, very quickly.

I’d like to share with you a quick anecdote of my own, as I just had a part of my car replaced. Unfortunately, due to a recent long drive and awkward reverse I hit a curb. The damage looked and felt minor, but the middle of the exhaust system was crinkled. It was quite damaged. Luckily, my girlfriend knows a mechanic and her friend had took work to him with very positive feedback.

Naturally, I took my car there. I now have a very high recommendation for this gentleman who completed the work – a shining knight in what can be seen as an industry waiting to rip people off. Not only did he do a stirling job (middle section replaced, car running and sounding just like it did) but he did it for – most importantly – a very fair price. He also went on to tell me exactly what might need done in the future. A great customer service experience.

So what does this tell you for the weekend? Whenever you’re going to see a mechanic, please, please go somewhere that you have a personal recommendation for. Build up a rapport with the guy, get a feel for how he works. If the garage is tidy and isn’t full of swearing grease-monkeys then that’s always a good sign…
