I don’t know if you have noticed in your area, but my local council appear to have decided to fix some of the most obvious and serious road damage that has surfaced (no pun intended) over the past cold weather spells. Of course, I’d welcome anything that meant we have safer driving/riding conditions, but frankly most of the work appears mediocre at best – and dangerous at worst.
The Mail Online has covered the fact that some pothole repairs have produced what some term potlumps. What this essentially means is that the road has been repaired in such a way that where previously there was a crater, there is now a lump/bump in the road that is sometimes of significant size.
The article from the Mail reports that this is a hazard for cyclists, but I’d suggest it is a hazard for road users. Wheel alignment could be put out on your car, you could be moved across the road on your motorbike or even thrown from your pedal cycle. Worst of all? Well, good taxpayer money is being spent on this. Money that will have to be spent several times over until either a) a road is completely resurfaced due to being an unusable mess or b) councils decide to use contractors that use proven solutions (such as the sustainable road surfacing technologies offered by ASI) that will actually last.
Actually, now that I’ve said that, I’m beginning to think that they knew what they were doing all along. After all, they (the government) did manage to spend £80,000 re-designing one single logo…
