If you don’t recognise the motor, then you’re clearly not much of a fan of McLaren then are you? That’s the one and only McLaren F1 – the former fastest production car in the world until Koenigsegg beat the record of 231 miles per hour. Bear in mind that the McLaren did this with a normally aspirated (albeit 6.1 litre, V12) engine and this is something very special indeed.
So, it held a record for speed. However, it now holds a new record. The last car off the production line (numbered 65) sold at auction for £2.5 million, more than £1 million over the price expected. This is of course even more than you can buy a Bugatti Veyron for – so it’s arguable whether you’re getting value for money!
The McLaren F1 is a 3-seater with a huge turning circle (as with all mega-powered cars) and a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds. It is the brainchild of one Gordon Murray, who is also responsible for the (almost equally insane) high performing Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
Would I buy one? Well, to many this remains the quintessential hypercar – offering performance that little else can touch – with even the legendary Tiff Needell stating that it is scarier than an Enzo! In saying that though, there are quite a few cars out there that are now in this sector – the Veyron, the Koenigsegg, the Zondas of this world… But go on then, I’ll take one, as it’s British…
