There’s a section of main, well used A road nearby me. I use it on a regular basis as it is the through road to another city and coastal areas. Two sections of it at one point were down to a single lane from two lanes. I could understand this if it was clear what work was being carried out and why – yet neither of these facts were known and it did not appear to be publicised, despite it being a significant road.
I’m not going to suggest, as they did on Top Gear, that where a road is down to one lane the speed limit should be increased. Obviously this was a satirical comment, though perhaps interesting way of increasing traffic speed through a slower section. Nonetheless, if when you drive through there are never any actual works going on, it serves to frustrate and annoy. Where is the workforce and what are they doing?
Money is lost every hour that traffic is slowed through a main route. Surely it would be better to, as once again the TG lads did, work around the clock to complete the remedial works in the quickest time possible. Roads are the backbone of the country and everything from the Stobbart wagon to the paper sales rep motor up and down supporting our infrastructure. It’s time we saw more investment.
