In what is probably the most stupid idea being put forward that I’ve heard in a long time, it is being postulated that the good old kerb should be removed from city centres.
I’m not convinced whatsoever that the humble kerb represents ‘urban clutter’ in any way, shape or form. In fact, I’d say it’s actually an extremely important part of the urban landscape, separating motorists and pedestrians in a safe way and in such a manner that means everyone can move and go about their business.
The other nonsense is regarding traffic signs and signals. Whilst the rarely used sign may perplex a motorist or two, generally speaking road signs have been devised to be as clear as possible and they are on the whole exactly that.
I’d hate to be driving somewhere without kerbs or road signs – pedestrians are bad enough at times. Remember the statistic that 10 metres either side of a crossing is one of the most dangerous parts of a road due to people randomly crossing…
Ultimately, the only place that should be without kerbs are urban pedestrianised routes that have no vehicle access whatsoever. Then, it’s perfectly safe to do away with any kind of separation between motorised traffic and those on foot because never the twain shall meet.
