Who Is Britain’s Favourite World Champion?

June 16, 2012 by Mr Butterscotch Leave a Comment

Do you want to help decide on which racing driver the nation holds dearest to their heart?

www.motorsportmagazine.com” title=”Motor Sport magazine.”>Motor Sport, the respected monthly magazine with the famous green masthead, has teamed up with the Motor Sports Association, governing body of UK motor sport, to ask the nation to vote for its favourite British Formula 1 World Champion, as part of a special celebration during National Motorsport Week (30 June – 8 July) to mark the UK’s domination of Grand Prix racing.

Britain has produced more F1 World Champions than any other nation by far, with a glorious roster of 10 since Mike Hawthorn became the UK’s first in 1958. With Brazil and Finland tied for second with three champions each, it is a record that looks unlikely ever to be surpassed.

Now Motor Sport, with the support of the MSA and the Daily Telegraph, will go to the nation to find out which British hero is best-loved ahead of this year’s Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6-8. Top motor racing writers have been commissioned to write articles on the 10 in the August issue of the magazine (on sale June 29), and readers will then be directed to cast their vote in a special online poll at www.motorsportmagazine.com. The poll is already live on the website for those keen to post their votes early.

The roll-call of 10 is made up of Hawthorn, Graham Hill (1962 & ’68), Jim Clark (1963 & ’65), John Surtees (1964), Sir Jackie Stewart (1969, ’71 & ’73), James Hunt (1976), Nigel Mansell (1992), Damon Hill (1996), Lewis Hamilton (2008) and Jenson Button (2009), a list that spans six decades of British motor sporting excellence. But in an extra twist, Motor Sport has added an ‘11th man’ to the roster: Sir Stirling Moss.

Motor Sport’s editor, Damien Smith, said: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with the MSA to discover which of Britain’s great F1 champions is held in the greatest of affection by the public. But this fantastic list of greats could not be complete without Stirling Moss. He famously missed out on an F1 title during his brilliant career, but in our eyes he will always be a champion, as I’m sure Britain’s dedicated racing enthusiasts will agree. We’re intrigued to find out who is their favourite.”

Don’t miss out on your chance to vote for your favourite racing driver!
