Here we have the Citroen DS Wild Rubis – the French at last potentially have an answer to the amazing Range Rover Evoque. It was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show 2013 and it looks a lot more solid than a number of other concept cars, so it’s an odds on bet that, depending on foreseen demand, it’ll be arriving in forecourts sooner rather than later. For such a large manufacturer, it may come as a surprise that Citroen is going to enter the market so late with an SUV.
The full-hybrid plug-in technology of DS Wild Rubis is perfectly in line with Citroën’s commitment to environmentally considerate motoring. The drivetrain comprises a 225bhp (165 kW) 1.6-litre THP petrol internal combustion engine. This is the engine that won the prestigious prize for the ‘international engine of the year’, awarded by a jury of 65 international motoring journalists. The 1.6 THP internal combustion engine is combined with a 70hp electric motor positioned on the rear axle. The electric motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged from a domestic socket.
Suited to all driving conditions, when accelerating sharply or when grip is poor, the concept automatically switches to 4WD mode with the electric motor driving the rear wheels and the internal combustion engine the front wheels. When driving in particularly difficult conditions, the driver can select forced 4WD mode. Activating 4WD mode increases grip and makes complete and safe use of the full potential of DS Wild Rubis.
So, what do you make of the Wild Rubis? Granted it has an unusual name, but it features a drive train that promises fuel economy and performance when required. Switchable 4WD should mean technical ability too on rough roads etc. No word has yet been spoken about the price point or a confirmed release but given that there’s a gap for something like this from Citroen don’t be too surprised to see one being driven by a yummy mummy near you…
