Two thirds of motorists back the idea of mandatory eye tests according to a new survey by Motorpoint.
An online poll by the UK’s leading car supermarket found 66.6% of people quizzed would support recent proposals announced by Brake for motorists to take a professional sight test every 10 years. Over 1,500 took part in the snap poll on the Motorpoint website – www.motorpoint.co.uk.
Brake, the national road safety charity, revealed earlier this year that more than 1.5m drivers in the UK have never had their eyes tested and by making the eye tests compulsory it could potentially reduce the number of road traffic casualties caused by poor vision by almost 3,000 a year. Currently the only measure to check a person’s eyesight is carried out during the driving test, and occasionally if the police suspect eyesight problems during a roadside incident.
Mark Carpenter, Managing Director of Motorpoint, said: “The message is clear from our recent online poll – motorists welcome mandatory eye tests being introduced at some point in the future. How this will work in practice remains to be seen but the idea of compulsory regular eyesight tests certainly seems to make common sense.”
