The Formula One world title will not be decided on points, but in fact be taken by the driver who wins the most races this season. Interestingly, were the rules in play last season, this would have meant that Lewis Hamilton would have been denied the title.
The changes were decided after the FIA agreed to a proposal by Bernie Ecclestone.
If two or more drivers finish with the same number of wins, then the decision will be taken down to points. However, this has been criticised by a number of drivers as being a rather unfair way for the title to be played out – and frankly it seems to be a rather strange ruling to me as it isn’t rewarding consistency. Perhaps though it’ll encourage more overtaking manoeuvers.
The point system remains unchanged this year, after a proposal to change the rewards for first, second and third to 12, 9 and 7.
