New Categories For Car Insurance Write Offs Explained

October 9, 2017 by Mr Butterscotch Leave a Comment

The codes used for insurance claims on vehicles have changed.  In case you weren’t aware of the updated grading system, we have outlined them below.  It is worth knowing that they look at the condition of the car rather than the relative value against the claim.

S – Structural damage that has been repaired (an insurance write off however).  Note that this could include chassis damage.

N – Non-structural damage that has been repaired (also an insurance write off).  This grading indicates that the chassis/main structure has not suffered damage.

A – Effectively the same as previous.  A total write-off with no possibility of repair nor any salvageable parts.

B – Very similar to category A, a significant amount of damage has been caused to a car in this category.  This grading demonstrates that there are some items that could be subject to salvage.

We would absolutely recommend steering well clear of anything that’s even had a hint of category A or B damage.  If you’re going to take the plunge on a car with an S graded claim, please make sure that the car has been professionally repaired by an authorised specialist.  Cars within the N category are the safest bet but even still the dealer should price such a car accordingly.

If you’re looking at a crash damaged car purchase, just make sure it is exactly what you want and at the right price point.  After all, there are a large number of cars that haven’t been in a crash that you could buy instead.
