The RAC is reporting that over 1.1 million Penalty Charge Notices were issued across the UK for misuse of bus lanes in 2017. That’s a staggering figure, especially when converted to actual cash – around £68 million to be precise. The questions we’d pose are whether a) you have received a PCN for bus lane misuse and b) whether you did so knowingly or inadvertently.
Bus lane cameras are a means to enforcement, but not everyone agrees that they are fair. If you have legitimately strayed into a bus only lane, you could well find that your plea for clemency isn’t supported. Signage is another issue. Busy, congested roads can suffer from all sorts of roadside furniture, complex layouts and ongoing works. It could be easy to miss the signs before it is too late.
Lastly, with fines ranging from £80-£160 it really does hit people in the pocket. It is perhaps then no wonder that drivers would like to know where the cash ends up…
