It’s not all about fast cars here at Car Articles – we enjoy fawning over practical, usable every day cars too. That’s why the new Mercedes-Benz E class estate features as the ‘Something for the weekend’ car for July. There’s not even a performance model yet (that’ll come at the end of the year and be badged the AMG E 43) but the ‘standard’ E220 D will do us just fine.
This latest powerplant has just shy of 200 horsepowers and 400 Nm of torque. A 9 gear automatic transmission is fitted as standard, so expect wonderfully smooth shifting and a relaxed drive. 0-62 miles per hour will be despatched in less than 8 seconds whilst a claimed figure of over 67 miles per gallon brings economy to good levels.
As standard, SE models come with Garmin Map Pilot navigation system; Agility Control suspension; Easy-Pack automatic powered tail gate; Parking Pilot including Parktronic and reversing camera; chrome roof rails; 64-colour selectable LED interior lighting; Keyless-Go starting function; heated front seats; DAB radio; and 17-inch alloys with a five-spoke design.
Naturally, the interior is luxurious and you’ll be comfortable for days behind the wheel. The rear boot space is generous whilst the size and angle of the rear hatch means stuffing belongings in is an easy affair. The swooping curves of the car really do have curb side appeal, albeit to the more reserved driver as opposed to the wannabe hooligan.
The Mercedes E class estate offers something few other cars can match – it’ll be able to just about do anything that you ask of it, whilst swallowing all your luggage, keeping your family safe and even providing a spirited drive where desired. The high list might put some off, but if you’re looking around the 40k mark, you could do a lot worse than one of these.
