With the festive season approaching, many of us suddenly have a lot more to think about than previously with our driving (or at least we should). This includes making sure your car is winter ready, contending with traffic jams, poor driving conditions, freezing cold interiors and more. Then of course there’s the rush of everyone going to see loved ones and potentially leaving their cars all over the place.
With that in mind, we’ll look at rule 239 of the Highway Code and make some recommendations for how you should park:
- Don’t park facing against the traffic flow – this is important in relation to emerging when you start to drive off as well as your rear reds being visible when vehicles pass you
- Stop as close as you can to the side so that as little of your vehicle is toward the centre line as possible (don’t curb those beautiful alloys though)
- Don’t forget the handbrake and to turn off everything – you don’t want to ‘quit’ your vehicle or have it roll off into a wall
You should also lock your car up and conceal all valuables – this is actually prescribed in the Highway Code! The most important thing is that you are careful and considerate where you park. Let’s keep the goodwill and cheer up by giving some thought to each other when out and about.
