The SUV category was chosen as this year’s first Car Of The Year award because of the proliferation of this type of vehicle now. Whether small or large, you can have a high riding, big wheeled tall car in just about every price bracket. However, we consider the Volvo XC60 to be the best of this year’s crop of cars.
We chose the XC60 this year as granted, it isn’t the cheapest car in the category… but in this case you genuinely get what you pay for. This is a premium, quality product with space, comfort and luxury offered in spades. Safety is of course always paramount Volvos and this car is no exception – it is quite literally one of the safest vehicles on the road.
Volvo has also considered the performance enthusiast and Polestar is firmly on board. A total of four XC60 models are available for Polestar optimisation in the UK, including the T8, T5, D5 and D4. The T8 in particular is extremely quick. The diesels give great MPG figures without giving up oodles of torque.
Ultimately, the purpose behind the SUV as a vehicle body style is no longer about being able to drive across fields or up hills. It is now all about whether a car looks good, has an elevated ride height for greater visibility and offering space inside. The XC60 meets this remit and very much more by being a car that will take you just about anywhere. You’ll feel as relaxed when you arrive as you did when you left. Volvo, we salute you and this excellent SUV.
