The SUV is now synonymous with British roads. They can be seen literally everywhere – from the starting point of the ‘Chelsea tractors’ all the way through to well heeled business people, it seems that just about everyone loves a tall and wide ‘look at me’ mobile. Higher ride height means better visibility and to top that, most people consider a larger vehicle better from a safety perspective (this isn’t necessarily the case). As modern engines are reasonably efficient, there’s often little between the standard hatch and these bigger cars to choose from when it comes to economy too.
The previous generation BMW X5 sold from 2007 to 2013, with the later model being produced from 2013 up until this very mild facelift that we see here. Most significant is the introduction of the hybrid model that Mat Watson is actually testing in the video from carwow. This variant, whilst offering a reduced boot space due to the electrics/batteries, should return a much better MPG and lower road tax. Does it live up to the promise? Watch the video to find out…
