British winters are rarely extreme by international standards, but cold temperatures, wet roads, reduced visibility, and occasional ice and snow create conditions that test both drivers and vehicles. A few hours of preparation in autumn can prevent breakdowns, accidents, and expensive repair bills. Here’s what to check and when.

Battery
The car battery is the component most likely to cause a winter breakdown. Cold weather reduces battery capacity — sometimes dramatically — and a battery that copes adequately in summer can fail to start the car on a cold January morning. If your battery is more than three years old or has shown any signs of weakness (slow cranking, warning light, or a recent flat), have it tested before winter.
Most fast-fit centres and garages will test a battery for free in a few minutes using a conductance tester. If it’s showing as marginal, replacing it before it fails is considerably less disruptive than a roadside recovery call. A new battery for most mainstream cars costs £60–£120 fitted — worthwhile insurance.
Tyres
Tyre grip diminishes significantly in cold temperatures on standard summer tyres. All-season tyres — which perform adequately across a range of temperatures — are a sensible choice for drivers who don’t want to manage two sets of tyres. Winter tyres, which are designed for use below seven degrees Celsius, offer the most grip in cold, wet, and icy conditions but require seasonal changeover.
Regardless of tyre type, check tread depth before winter. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but 3mm is when wet weather performance starts to degrade meaningfully. Check pressures regularly — tyre pressure drops in cold weather, and under-inflated tyres reduce grip further.
Antifreeze
The coolant in your car contains antifreeze that prevents the cooling system from freezing and cracking in cold temperatures. Check the antifreeze concentration before winter — a simple antifreeze tester (available from any motor factor for a few pounds) tells you the temperature down to which the mixture is protected.
The correct mixture is typically 50% antifreeze and 50% water, providing protection to around -34°C — well below anything the UK experiences. If the concentration is too low, top up with neat antifreeze and water in the correct ratio. Don’t just add water, which dilutes the antifreeze.
Screen Wash
Plain water in the screen wash reservoir will freeze in cold weather, potentially cracking the reservoir and certainly leaving you without screen wash when you need it most. Use a screen wash solution mixed to a concentration appropriate for winter temperatures — check the label. In cold snaps, -15°C or lower rated solutions are worthwhile.
Windscreen Wipers and Visibility
Wiper blades deteriorate over time, and old or worn blades smear rather than clear in rain and snow. Check that wipers are clearing the screen cleanly and replace them if they’re leaving streaks. Winter-specific wiper blades are heavier and more resistant to ice and snow build-up, though standard blades work fine in typical UK conditions.
Clean all glass thoroughly — including the rear window and mirrors — before setting off. Never drive with a partially cleared windscreen. In freezing conditions, allow time to clear snow and ice fully before moving.
Lights
Winter means driving in lower light conditions more frequently. Check all lights are working — headlights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, and fog lights. Clean headlight lenses if they’ve become yellowed or hazy — this significantly reduces light output and is worth addressing.
Know how to activate your front and rear fog lights, and when to use them — they’re required in visibility below 100 metres, but using them in normal conditions dazzles other drivers.
Brakes
Have any brake squealing, grinding, or pulling investigated before winter. Brake performance in cold, wet conditions is critical, and worn brakes are not something to defer during the higher-risk winter months.
Emergency Kit
Keep a basic winter emergency kit in the car from October onwards: a windscreen scraper and de-icer spray, a torch, a warm blanket, jump leads or a portable jump starter, a high-visibility jacket, a warning triangle, and a small shovel if you drive in areas where snowfall is possible. A bag of cat litter or a piece of old carpet can provide traction if you get stuck in ice or snow.
Driving in Winter Conditions
On ice and packed snow, stopping distances can be ten times longer than on dry tarmac. Allow significantly more space to the vehicle ahead. Brake, accelerate, and steer gently — smooth inputs are far more effective than sharp ones on low-grip surfaces.
In snow, use the highest gear possible to reduce wheel spin. If you get stuck, gentle rocking between first and reverse (on a manual) can help work the car free. If the car is fitted with a snow or winter mode, use it.
In fog, reduce speed and use dipped headlights. Don’t use full beam — it reflects off the fog and reduces visibility. Use rear fog lights only in visibility below 100 metres and switch them off when conditions improve.
The British tendency to continue as normal in adverse weather conditions is understandable but sometimes misplaced. When conditions are genuinely dangerous, the correct decision is sometimes simply not to drive.
