10 Tips for European Driving Holidays

June 21, 2010 by Fraser Leave a Comment

Going on a driving holiday in Europe could be one of the ways to experience different cultures, do exciting leisure activities, dine in the best restaurants in the world and enjoy being on the road while taking in breathtaking sights. Europe is home to many beautiful countries that offer the best of everything. This makes it the perfect setting for a vacation with family or friends or a honeymoon or a relaxing trip to forget about the stress that you deal with everyday. If you are planning to have a European driving holiday, here are some tips which could help you out.

  1. First off, do your research. Search for routes that other individuals who have gone on driving holidays in Europe recommend. You could list down the countries you are most interested in visiting as well as the scenic spots that you would like to see. Some of the best driving holiday destinations on Europe would include Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Norway, Greece, Romania and Ireland.
  2. From the information that you gather after researching, you can try coming up with a schedule or an itinerary that would make your trip more organized and would make sure that you would be prepared for your trip. However, if you are not into schedules or planning, you can always try being adventurous and just drive to where your car would take you.
  3. You should also make your transportation arrangements ahead of time. If you are on a budget, you could estimate the transportation costs and decide whether you would be renting or using your own car. If you would be going on a driving holiday across Europe for a relaxing vacation or honeymoon, you may also want to consider renting a convertible to make your experience even more unforgettable.
  4. Before going on your trip, make sure that the vehicle you would be using is in good condition. Check if you have the tools and other devices needed in the event that your car breaks down. You would probably be wise to have some European breakdown cover so you can call on professional assistance. A good readable map of the areas that you will visit is also essential!
  5. If you would be going on a driving holiday with your kids, make sure that they have plenty of small toys, books and other playthings that would keep them occupied during the trip. This would make sure that you would not have to deal with them being fussy on the road. You might also want to plan out a more scenic route that they would be able to enjoy.
  6. Another important thing to remember if you would be traveling with young children would be making sure that the car seats are properly installed.
  7. You should also pack plenty of food, snacks, water and other beverages just in case you get hungry and the next stop where you can grab a bite is still an hour or miles away. This is especially important if you are traveling with children.
  8. You might also bring along CDs that you could play as you go on your trip. Spending a long time in the car can get a little dull no matter how nice the scenery is!
  9. When packing your luggage, check if everything has been properly secured and that they have not been loosely loaded into your car.
  10. Lastly, if you are doing the driving, make sure that you would not be going on long stretches of driving without resting or switching with the person you are traveling with.

Through considering these tips, you should be able to be prepared for your European driving holiday, making sure that you would be having an enjoyable time throughout the trip.
