Jaguar Land Rover is set to be the next winner in the government’s continuing efforts to hand out taxpayer money – though this time it is in the form of a grant. Land Rover has stated that the money will go toward producing a new car that will be the most efficient, smallest and lightest in the history of the brand.
Unlike the other money that the motor industry is discussing (to the tune of somewhere around £3.2bn to keep the industry afloat), this is part of a separate scheme and was actually applied for some time ago. However, this still works to benefit the company as it will secure jobs at the Merseyside plant.
The new vehicle is likely to be based on the LRX concept vehicle and would do a great deal to widen the appeal of the brand. Lower CO2 emissions mated with regenerative braking, stop-start and a lighter kerb weight would instantly mean a ‘Chelsea Tractor’ that isn’t abhorred by the general populace.

March 12, 2009 at 2:42 pmYeah, I completely agree – a great looking car. It puts the X6 to shame.
JLR are two very important symbols of the British industry (regardless of the origin of their actual ownership) and it would have been unimaginable for Government not stumping up some cash.
Let’s just hope it’s put to good use and that the LRX is as good as it looks.
