With the bank holiday weekend sure to be a busy one, GEM has some tips to ensure the best driving experience possible in what is sure to be very busy traffic:
David Williams MBE, CEO of GEM Motoring Assist, comments:“While wishing everyone safe and stress-free driving this Easter, we also urge motorists to take extra care while travelling, especially with family members and children on board. There are measures that we can all take to prepare for what is going to undoubtedly be a busy weekend for road users up and down the country.”
GEM’s bank holiday travel tips:
1. Don’t over indulge: shed any unnecessary weight in the car, and fuel consumption will fall by one per cent for every per cent of the car’s weight you remove
2. Don’t tire out your tyres: a vehicle with even one of its tyres deflated by 20 per cent, increases fuel consumption by five per cent. Makesure yours are inflated to the correct pressure
3. Don’t do things at the last minute: always prepare your car before any journey, especially long trips. Ensure you check the tyres, brakes, windscreen wash, lights, oil and water levels
4. Do make a plan: aproximately 350,000 tons of fuel is wasted every year by people getting lost while driving, so ensure you plan the most direct route to your destination. Avoid heavily congested areas, and peak driving times too
5. Do slow things down: most cars run at their peak efficiency at 60mph, and for every five mph you drive above that, you will lose six per cent of your fuel economy
6. Do pull your weight: when towing a caravan, remember that in the UK you are restricted to a maximum speed of 50mph on single carriageway roads, and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways, providing that no lower limits are in force
