In my usual helpful way, I picked up the other half last night as she was in the city centre. A few odd things to note as I did so – firstly there was a road that was closed off, due to there being a huge hole in it (not something you see every day). Secondly, this road is a major one, so it resulted in me taking a rather roundabout route to get her.
When I did manage to track her down, we were caught by the lights. So there we were, waiting for them to change. They did, and I certainly did not (by any stretch of the imagination) roar off. Had I of done so, then perhaps things would have been much, much worse.
A cyclist had clearly ignored the rules of the road, crossed through a red (I was on green) and came charging out of nowhere. What made it worse was that visibility was starting to reduce as it was now beyond dusk, and this guy had no lights on his bike. I had to take evasive action and it was somewhat nerve wracking.
The fact remains, however you use the road (as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist) you should use it with common sense and care. You don’t get any more rights when you’ve been in an accident, so the best thing to do is to avoid one in the first place. Don’t become a statistic. Take your time, take care.
N.B. Mr Cyclist, if you’re reading this, you can read the Highway Code rules that govern your mode of transport here.
